Chat with a sexbot with pictures
The artificial intelligence learns and improves from every single conversation. One lazy (or clever, depending on your perspective) OKCupid dater, Schuyler Hunt, hooked a profile up to Cleverbot to automate his messaging and tracked his results on a Tumblr called “Girls Who Date Computers”. Some of Hunt’s conversations are indistinguishable from organic exchanges between two humans. When Microsoft unleashed Tay, an artificially intelligent chatbot with the personality of a flippant 19-year-old, the company hoped that people would interact with her on social platforms like Twitter, Kik, and Group Me.The idea was that by chatting with her you’d help her learn, while having some fun and aiding her creators in their AI research. She quickly racked up over 50,000 Twitter followers who could send her direct messages or tweet at her, and she’s sent out over 96,000 tweets so far.So are we really surprised that sex and dating bots are among the first applications of chatbot technology? While many woes are caused by the proliferation of fake bot accounts on apps like Tinder, the right bots can take your love life to the next level.Microsoft has reportedly been deleting some of these tweets, and in a statement the company said it has “taken Tay offline” and is “making adjustments.”Microsoft blamed the offensive comments on a “coordinated effort by some users to abuse Tay’s commenting skills to have Tay respond in inappropriate ways.” That may be partly true, but I got a taste of her meaner side on Wednesday without doing much to provoke her.
We want you to come and have fun with us soon again.
That way, she could refuse to respond to certain words (like “Holocaust” or “genocide”), or respond with a canned comment like “I don’t know anything about that.” She also should have been prevented from repeating comments, which seems to have been what caused some of the trouble. The behavior Tay reacted to—and the reactions she gave—should surprise nobody at Microsoft.
Conversational AI is really tricky, and it learns by being trained on lots of data.
Boyer spoke on what he learned from the experiment: The most interesting part for me was learning that AIM sexbots are set up to try and tell a complete and compelling story...
That is: overeager and lonely/bored 20-something girl chats up unwitting stranger, instantly "feels a little naughty," tries to engage in a little sexy banter, but quickly gets so overwhelmed that they need to rush to their conveniently adjacent cam-girl setup to continue the conversation there.
